This circular iron tsuba represents a refined example of early Shōami workmanship, for me its clearly attributed to the Ko-Shōami lineage.

Executed in delicate openwork (sukashi), the design centers on two symmetrically arranged myōga motifs—stylized forms of Japanese ginger traditionally associated with divine protection, good fortune, and the warding off of misfortune.

To either side of the central composition appear angular openwork elements interpreted as an abstracted form of the Matsudaira crest (Matsudaira-mon), alluding to the authority and legitimacy of the Matsudaira/Tokugawa family. The pairing of these elements suggests a symbolic interplay between spiritual and worldly protection, reflecting concerns meaningful to samurai of the period.

The tsuba’s harmonious balance, cleanly cut ironwork, and understated decorative detail are characteristic of the Ko-Shōami aesthetic. Its patina and subtle surface texture further attest to its age and authenticity. The piece is certified by the NBTHK (Hozon) as a work of the Shōami school.

Picture from "Eckhard Kremers Book- Sukashi Tsuba in Europäischen Sammlungen" showing a similar work of this interesting motive with a slightly different arrangement,
