This tsuba is a robust iron guard with the distinctive character of katchūshi workmanship, showing a natural, hammered surface and an expressive, asymmetrical outline typical of early armorer-made guards. The plate has an intentionally irregular rim and a coarse, textured surface that reflects traditional forging methods rather than later decorative refinement. The central nakago-ana is flanked by two elongated hitsu-ana, and above it appear the cut-out characters attributed to Myochin Munetsugu (宗次), a name associated with the Myochin armorer line. The design is simple yet powerful: openwork elements are carved with decisive, almost rustic cuts, leaving thick walls and conveying a sense of strong structural integrity.

The proportions align well with Muromachi-period tachi tsuba, which were typically larger, thicker, and built for practical battlefield use. The rough iron surface, the lack of decorative motifs, and the emphasis on bold negative space further support an early date and a functional purpose. Such guards are often associated with the Myochin school, renowned for its expertise in armor and early sword fittings. Although signatures on katchūshi guards are rare and usually subject to debate, the style is fully consistent with work attributed to this tradition.

In contrast to Edo-period artistic tsuba, this example retains a raw, martial aesthetic: the uneven rim, hammered texture, and forceful cutouts communicate the directness of early craftsmanship. Its characteristics distinguish it clearly from later decorative schools and place it within the lineage of armorer-made iron guards, likely influenced by or belonging to the Myochin tradition, with the stylistic possibility of being associated with Munetsugu as noted in the inscription.
