Antique Japanese Tsuba – Higo Province
Shimizu Jingo School (清水甚吾)
This iron tsuba is an authentic work of the Shimizu Jingo School from Higo Province, one of the most respected traditions of Japanese sword fittings.
The tsuba displays the hallmark characteristics of Jingo workmanship:
a powerful yet restrained sukashi design, a thick and softly rounded rim, and iron of outstanding quality with a deep, dark patina. The overall aesthetic corresponds closely to works attributed to the second to fourth masters of the Jingo lineage, dating to the early to mid Edo period.
The minimalist openwork composition reflects the strong wabi-sabi sensibility of Higo fittings, favoring quiet strength and balance over decorative excess. The presence of well-integrated copper sekigane further supports its authenticity and historical use.
Jingo tsuba are highly regarded and actively sought after by collectors for their timeless design and superior iron quality.
