This tsuba is a characteristic example of Owari work from the Edo period, most plausibly early–mid Edo (17th century), and stands in clear contrast to the pictorial Aizu Shōami piece shown previously.

The guard is of round (maru-gata) form, forged from a dense iron plate with a dark, dry patina typical of Owari material. The rim is relatively thin but firm, without ornamental treatment, emphasizing structural clarity rather than surface decoration.

The design is executed in bold sukashi (openwork), composed of thick, confident bars radiating and intersecting around the nakago-ana. The negative space is as important as the iron itself, creating a powerful, almost architectural composition. The carving is slightly irregular and robust, showing hand-forged character rather than later, more refined pierce-work.

Notable Owari characteristics visible here include:

- Strong, muscular iron with minimal refinement

- Abstract or semi-abstract sukashi design, prioritizing balance and strength over narrative imagery

- Functional austerity, reflecting Momoyama-to-early Edo warrior taste

Evidence of handwork around the nakago-ana, consistent with use and age

Unlike Kyō-sukashi or later Akasaka work, this piece lacks elegance-for-elegance’s sake. Instead, it embodies the martial sobriety for which Owari guards are known—guards meant to be mounted and used, not merely admired.
