This iron sukashi tsuba, can be attributed to the Akasaka school and possibly to Akasaka Tadatoki, features a powerful architectural openwork of a torii shrine gate (torii tōru) set within a compact maru-gata plate. The forging is dense and well-consolidated, finished with a deep, dark, almost glossy patina that emphasizes the clear silhouette of the design. The torii’s uprights and lintels are cut with decisiveness and good depth, and the negative spaces are kept clean—an approach consistent with Akasaka’s disciplined sukashi tradition.
To the right, the composition is animated by a pine branch (matsu) with paired needles and a rugged, flowing trunk line, carved in a restrained relief and defined through fine, directional chisel work. This evergreen motif introduces a seasonal and auspicious nuance—pine being a symbol of longevity and steadfastness—while still preserving the overall structural clarity of the guard. The interplay between the strict geometry of the torii and the organic sweep of the pine is a hallmark of stronger Akasaka work, where “decoration” remains subordinate to the underlying architectural logic.
Given the confident balance, the controlled asymmetry, and the crispness of the piercings, a kantei to Tadatoki is plausible—particularly if the iron surface and internal edge treatment (niku and tagane presence) align with other examples attributed to him.
