Tsuba - Owari Karigane - Muromachi

This tsuba displays strong Owari characteristics: a dense, well-forged iron plate with large, bold geometric sukashi openings forming a lattice-like pattern. The clean angular lines create a sense of architectural stability.

It has a certain aesthetic which makes me feel it could be related to the Kyoto school Akasaka of Kariganeya Hikobei.

The geometric structure symbolizes protection, discipline, and controlled strength—core attributes of the warrior class. Owari designs are especially admired for their clarity and unembellished power.

A samurai choosing this tsuba likely valued martial purity, directness, and functional elegance—qualities associated with conservative, battlefield-rooted taste.
