Menuki - Monkeys by Goto Momoyama - NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon

This pair of Menuki is an excellent example of the Gotō tradition of the Momoyama period, depicting monkeys with chestnuts (Kuri-mochi saru). Executed in shakudō with katachibori modelling and gold iroe, the figures display a particularly expressive and finely controlled treatment of the bodies, faces, limbs, and surrounding details.

The lively composition and restrained use of gold decoration are characteristic of the sophisticated aesthetic associated with the Gotō school. Although unsigned (mumei), the pair has received an official NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon certification, with attribution to Gotō (Momoyama period).
