This work depicts spiders in a carved cave and their web with a bright gold inlay. The motive can be called sasagani (笹蟹, spider, spider web)
It was probably made by a school known as Edo Higo or Yotsuya Higo at the end of the Edo period, led by Kumagai Yoshiyuki, a craftsman in the Hosokawa family. It is a work that is well suited to the long-handled kobusho (military office) arrangements that were popular at the end of the Edo period.
